Preliminary Task 1- After Effects Research

--AFTER EFFECTS--

1. Fade in or Fade out transition.

We will be making use of this transition method during the majority of our Opening sequence, 'Tyrant.' The transitions will occur quickly, with an abrupt nature, and will fade to a fully black screen which will be maintained for a few seconds before fading into the next scene.

With this after effect we are wanting to add a theme of suspense as the shot durations will be short but the duration of the black screen will be much longer, dragging the moment out and leaving the viewers in anticipation of what will happen next. Furthermore, the abrupt manner in which the black appears will be mirroring the abrupt way in which the victim was preyed upon by his bullies.

2. Fog After Effect.

We may add this fog effect into our Opening Sequence in the alley way where the bullies chase 'Jack' into to add an eerie feeling to 'Tyrant.' This will add to the level of intensity and suspense as it is already completely dark out and street lit, however, layering fog over this will complete this look we are going for.

To ensure that the fog isn't too overpowering and unrealistic I will make sure to make the effect very subtle but still existent enough to be seen/noticed. However, the amount of fog in the alley will be slightly stronger than in the street where he starts off being chased.

3. Glitch Effect.

This effect will be used in the presentation of our title, 'Tyrant,' where the name will glitch as it being presented. This will make the title seem more intimidating, as it moves around really quickly, supporting the idea our title portrays- a person who has no legal limits on his or her power by law or constitution.

3. Zooming in and out Effect.

This after effect will be useful in our Opening Sequence when displaying the title 'Tyrant' as, after the title has glitched, or while it is glitching we can zoom in on the title making it appear bigger and more intimidating up until the point where it is consuming the while screen. This will add to the intimidating effect we are wanting the title to have on the viewers.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION:

When actually attempting an after effect for myself it was apparent that more tutorials were needed to show me how to do the basics like, extending the timeline of the clip. This was needed as I attempted to transition between the two opening shots, but needed to extend the duration of my timeline to actually see the whole second clip. I also researched very simple things like how to 'play' and 'pause' the video, and how to 'undo' and 'redo' things. All of this proved successful as I have now mastered the after effect of fading into and out of black, and am now more confident to try a more difficult effect.
