Thriller Analysis
Duress
Techniques used
- Glitching effect when displaying credits- immediately develops sketchy persona of film
- Font colour and complexity- the font is plain and white adding more questions as it does not disclose much about the nature of the film itself.
- Cuts to and from the shots back to the black screen with the plain white credit on it- only shows limited and short shots- again disclosing a very limited amount of information.
- Extreme close up shots- not a lot of context given as to what is happening.
- Dangerous themes are shown- e.g. fire, dead, rotting animal, search and rescue helicopter.
The title:
- The title 'Duress' slowly fades in, glitches a few times (mirroring the credits shown before), then suddenly disappears only a few seconds after appearing. This adds to then suspense of the film and the audiences skepticism towards its potentially harmful nature. The font of the title itself is extremely simple and relatively small in comparison to the amount of black which surrounds it, almost engulfing it, foreshadowing that similarly the darkness- representing danger and death- will also engulf/ overcome the character(s) involved.
A Quiet Place
Techniques used
- Silence- no non-digetic sound, only the digetic sound (which is extremely minimal)- This mirrors the title of the film, 'A quiet place'
- No credits or film title is shown within the first 2.30m- This is effective as it does not break the silence.
- Many low angle shots are used- make the location seem even more desolate and empty.
- Very minimal movement- In the first 40 sec of the film- adds to the empty, eerie feel created with the exclusion of sound.
- Short shot duration- first 40 sec.. develops scene
- Subtitles are included when the character signs to ensure the exclusion of sound is kept.
- No lights are on anywhere throughout the town.. this is accentuated in the store as Silhouettes are used making the characters appears unclear and insignificant as they are supposed to be.
Suspense Scene
Techniques used
- Shadows-adds to the eerie, mysterious nature of the character as we do not get a visual of them- develops that he is a skeptical character who may have harmful intentions
- Blur- adds to the eerie, mysterious nature of the character- develops that he is a skeptical character who may have harmful intentions
- No music- Just a pad holding the same eerie note which then develops with a "clanging" noise as the scene intensifies.
- Lag- shows her staggering movements as she scrambles away, knowing there is trouble
- Slow motion- shows the characters perspective- what is happening to her is so surreal and is almost taking place in slow motion to her.
- Camera is shaky and appears as though it is from the perpetrators perspective.
- Close ups are used to catch the characters full emotive state- her face and the expressions they show, her hands shaking, and her feet steadily accelerating as she attempts to move away from the perpetrator.
